A Light in the Alley A Light in the Alley: 1 Corinthians 7:1-5
Listen to Audio

As we pick up our 1 Corinthians series after the holidays, this week's passage begs the question: What does it mean that our spouse has authority over our body? Is this a cultural or chauvinistic statement by the apostle Paul? Join Pastor Tyler Jones as he faces the topic head on, and digs into the beauty of 1 Corinthians 7. We as humans are once again found guilty of selling God short by settling for short-lived pleasure over knowing Him.

Six intentions of Sex

  1. Procreation
  2. Fun
  3. Communication
  4. Knowledge
  5. Signpost of the glory of God
  6. Act of worship

I Peter 3:7

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Questions for Reflection

  1. If you are single, use this time to allow God to guide your thoughts about sex. Sexuality is a powerful force and if it is used outside of God’s intention it crushes. Will you be willing to change in light of what God says?

  2. If you are married, please take notes and either whisper now or talk later today. Are you taking care of each other sexually? Do you experience God’s intentions for sex: knowledge, communication, fun, worship, the glory of God?

  3. Marriage was not meant to make you happy but to teach you the gospel. If you enter marriage with entitlement and authority, it will fail. How will you die to yourself and how will you submit to God/to the couple?
