A Light in the Alley 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Listen to Audio

Freedom is highly valued in our culture today. Individual rights are fought for and treasured, protected as sacred. What does it look like to be "free in Christ"? How far does this freedom extend? As usual, the writings of Paul in the letter to the Corinthian church seems on the outset to be somewhat limiting, but in actuality have great beauty and truth within. Join Pastor Tyler Jones as he digs into Paul's teaching on love vs. knowledge and just who "the weaker brother" really is.

1 John 4:7-8

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Colossians 1:21-22

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Love is not an emotion or feeling. Love is active, it heals, it refuses to leave you broken. Love carries the weight of giving life to others. Are you stuck in having knowledge about Christ or through Him are you loving others?
  2. Jesus claims to be God, how will you deal with this claim? He died for you, how will you respond?
  3. Considering the weaker brother, how can you answer the following: what does the Bible say, what does your conscience say, what does your weakness require, what does your friend need, what are your preferences?
