Proverbs Proverbs - Envy
Listen to Audio

Continuing our study of Proverbs, Tyler Jones speaks on the issue of Envy.

C.S. Lewis said: If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has put eternity into man's heart.

Proverbs 14:30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Psalm 73:3-4 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills.

Proverbs 27:4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

Psalm 73:17 I entered the Sanctuary of God.

Reflection: 1. C.S. Lewis said, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” Do you agree? If so, how will you find this other world?

  1. Envy is wanting someone else’s life. Who do you envy? Be honest, who do you envy? Why do you think having something else will satisfy your soul, are the people you envy not more messed up in reality than you? What will solve your insatiable thirst for joy?

  2. Jesus Christ is the only un-envious one. When you find identity and value in Him, envy will begin to recede. Ask God for knowledge of His love and experience of His love—it is a guarantee because of the cross of Christ.
