Tyler Jones wraps up the Proverbs series by talking about what it means to be a Godly Woman, based on Proverbs 31.
The Godly woman of Proverbs 31:
Excellent: Hebrew: Hayil - Competent Strength - Connotes wealth - Warrior class
Psalm 118:8-9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
Psalm 115:3 Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him.
Job 40:4-5 "Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer twice, I will proceed no further."
Psalm 50:9-11 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine.
Bruce Walke says: One can successfully place confidence in Yahweh – no other entity can be an ultimate object of trust. The present exception elevates the valiant wife, who herself fears the Lord, to the highest level of spiritual and physical competence.
Walke continues: The goal of her work is to produce clothing, a symbol in the Bible of industry, intelligence, and, when worn, of glory.
Reflection Questions:
We all have needs and so we all have things that we have placed trust in. What is it that you trust in? If it is outside of the person of God, how is that thing going to fail you? How can you transfer trust to God alone?
The woman in Proverbs 31 is Godly. Godliness is our highest value on earth because it means God-likeness; not that we are like Him in transcendence or power but we are called to reflect His nature. Godliness is key because when you obtain it, you will begin to interact in the world like God. Are you a godly person?
The woman of Proverbs 31 is an amazing woman and none of it is by chance. She labors to love and know God. Her wisdom, obtained by fearing the Lord, blesses her life and her family’s life. How will you become like the woman of Proverbs 31? Men, are you praising these woman for their character and their nature?
